Follow the instructions to set up eduroam if you are using Windows XP.

System requirements

Hardware

To use eduroam at UWA on a Windows XP notebook computer, it must have either 802.11b or 802.11g wireless capability.

Software

eduroam at UWA uses 802.1x implementing WPA2 for security.

To use WPA2 you will need Windows XP Service Pack 2 + Microsoft Hotfix (KB893357), or Service Pack 3 (preferred)

Visitors to the University of Western Australia must substitute the username and passwords supplied to them by their home institution for those suggested below.

If you have already configured your computer, skip to Connecting.

Configuration

  1. Open the 'Network Connections' window.

  2. Click on the 'Wireless Network Connection' icon.
  3. Click on the 'Change advanced settings' link in the 'Network Tasks' sub-menu.

  4. Click on the 'Wireless Networks' tab.
  5. Click on the 'Add' button.

  6. Make sure that the 'Association' tab is selected.
  7. Enter the Network name (SSID) as 'eduroam'. Select 'WPA2' from the Network Authentication drop down menu. Select 'AES' from the Data encryption drop down menu.

  8. Select the 'Authentication' tab.

  9. Select 'Protected EAP (PEAP)' from the EAP type drop-down list.
  10. Uncheck the 'Authenticate as computer when computer information is available' checkbox.
  11. Uncheck the 'Authenticate as guest when user or computer information is unavailable' checkbox.

  12. Check the 'Validate server certificate' box. In the menu, locate the certificate 'UTN-USERFirst-Hardware' and check the box next to it.
  13. Select 'Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP2)' as the Authentication Method.
  14. Click on the 'Configure' button.
  15. Click the 'Properties' button.

  16. Ensure that the checkbox in the 'EAP MSCHAPv2 Properties' dialog is not checked.
  17. Click on OK'.
  18. Close any remaining windows, you are now ready to connect to the wireless network.

Connecting

  1. When the eduroam network is available, a balloon will appear in the lower right side of the screen. Click on the balloon to process your credentials.

  2. Enter your username and password. If you're a UWA person, your username and password will be:
    username: PersonID@uwa.edu.au
    password: Pheme password
    Click OK.

  3. Click on the 'OK' button to accept the certificate. You are now connected to the wireless network.
